If you have minor teeth imperfections such as chipping, cracking, or staining, porcelain veneers can help you cover such defects and give you a brighter smile. On average porcelain veneers can last 10 to 17 years, however, with the right care your veneers can last for a much longer period.
At Soothing Care Dental, it is important that our patients have the right guidance on how to extend the life of their veneers:
Maintain good oral hygiene
Veneers should be looked after as you would your natural teeth, therefore brushing your teeth twice a day, and flossing once a day can help extend the longevity of your veneers. It is important to remember that veneers do not stop the build-up of decay, so it is still vital to maintain a high standard of oral health.
Attend regular check ups
Visiting the dentist for check up and cleans can help remove build-up plaque that your toothbrush can not remove alone. Your dentist will also check your veneers to ensure that are still secured or if there are any visible signs of potential damage. Regular check-ups are also important to help detect diseases, abnormalities, and early signs of decay.
Avoid hard foods
Direct pressure with hard foods may cause your veneer to damage. Therefore, you should avoid biting directly into hard foods. Consider chopping hard food into small bite sized pieces, because if damaged your veneer will need to be replaced.
Teeth grinding can also cause damage to veneers. This usually occurs when we become stressed, have an abnormal bite, or suffer from nocturnal bruxism (teeth griding during sleep). We recommend that our patients with porcelain veneers to have a mouth guard to protect the teeth during sleep.
Avoid foods that stain
Although porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, over time certain foods and drinks can ruin their pearly white appearance. The main causes of stains are coffee, tea, wine, and cigarettes. Try and limit your consumption or use a straw to reduce the risk of stains.
